Toulon is a city in southern France and a large military harbor on the Mediterranean coast, with a major French naval base. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur region, Toulon is the prefecture of the Var department, in the former province of Provence.

The city is organized into 5 districts. Southwest and Northwest, which mainly encompass living suburbs as well as commercial sub-districts, North and East, which beside being seat for the prefecture of Var also encompass some of the most popular sub-districts in the city, and lastly South Central, which is the district that encompasses the Old Town, Old Harbor and High City.

Toulon is best known as a naval town, not only for the navy base and home of the French carrier Charles de Gaule, but also for the interesting and very enlightening Naval Museum, which takes the visitor on a wonderful exciting journey into France’s naval history.

Transportation

The road to Toulon is not a particularly difficult one, but there are a lot of transportation modes involved. The fastest way, and probably the cheapest, is by plane. From there the only option would be to rent a car or take a cab, which might be a bad idea if you’re traveling on a budget. Other options include traveling by train, boat, or own car.

If you think the best time to visit Toulon is in summer, then you’re only a quarter right. Actually the best time is anytime, but not because the beaches are welcoming all year round bu because Toulon is full of fun activities and events every month of the year.

Restaurnats & Nightlife

Toulon and the area around the city are part of a popular wine region, which bottles some of the best and not so pricey wines in France. The cuisine is also one of the best in France and the nightlife doesn’t disappoint either. In any case Toulon is surely a select and exquisite vacation spot.

The history of Toulon is about 3000 years old. The Ligures settled here because of the exceptional tactical conditions. It is for this reason that Toulon became early on a town of military vocation.

The temperature in Toulon is quite moderate, mainly due to the proximity to the sea. The climate is Mediterranean characterized by dry summers and abundant sunshine. Rain is rare, but torrential, and also very disproportionate. The summers are hot and it hardly rains, but winters are mild and abundant in precipitation.
